The Commune Social by Neri&Hu: Four Experiences of Sharing in Shanghai

A restaurant founded on sharing

The Commune Social at Shanghai's Design Republic Design Commune brings the informal character of Spanish tapas into a historic building. Neri&Hu conceived the project as a series of social experiences rather than a single restaurant dining hall. The idea of sharing food becomes the organizing principle for four connected but distinct spaces.

Four destinations in one evening

The architects divided the interior into a tapas bar, a dining room, a dessert bar and a secret cocktail bar. Each has a different spatial atmosphere and encourages a different kind of social interaction. Guests can move between them during the same visit, changing setting as they progress from drinks to food and finally dessert.

Architecture as a sequence

This arrangement turns circulation into an essential part of the restaurant. Instead of locating all activity around a single table, the plan invites guests to discover additional places and encounters. The transitions between rooms become as significant to the experience as the spaces themselves, making the visit feel like a journey through a small, inhabited building.

A building with a history

The interior occupies an early-twentieth-century Shanghai structure. Neri&Hu allows its historical presence to remain visible while carefully inserting contemporary counters, fixtures and dining areas. The contrast between inherited enclosure and modern restaurant activity gives the project a recognisable relationship with the city.

The energy of the tapas bar

The tapas bar offers an immediate, animated setting for the preparation and enjoyment of small shared dishes. Its arrangement makes the activity of serving and eating visible, supporting the sociable character of the concept. The adjoining dining room provides a more settled atmosphere for longer gatherings and conversations.

Private encounters and the secret bar

The hidden cocktail bar introduces an additional degree of intimacy. Its role is not simply to add another commercial function, but to make discovery part of the evening. The relationship between the lively communal rooms and more secluded settings allows different groups of guests to inhabit the restaurant in their own ways.

Dessert as an architectural event

Rather than leave dessert as a final course in the same room, Neri&Hu gives it a destination of its own. The dessert bar changes the atmosphere and focuses attention on the last part of the meal. This makes the culinary sequence explicit in architecture, connecting each phase of the experience with a different physical place.

A social interior

The Commune Social is notable for the clarity of its idea: sharing is expressed through the way guests move, gather and occupy spaces, rather than through superficial decoration. The project remains a study in how restaurant architecture can make social interaction itself a central part of design.
