Joseph Altuzarra gave Spring/Summer 2027 a compelling starting point: the possibility of dressing without having to settle on a single version of yourself. Presented at New York's Woolworth Building on September 12, the collection drew on photographs of Casa Susanna, the Catskills retreat associated with a mid-century community exploring feminine dress. Speaking to Fashionista after the show, the designer described the freedom and pleasure he found in those images. His clothes made that idea tangible through proportion, layering and deliberately unsettled combinations.
The opening look established the proportions immediately. A generous black leather jacket sat over a full, brightly checked skirt, its high collar and rounded sleeves concentrating weight above the waist. Below, the checks spread outward in yellow, green and pink. The pairing allowed both garments to retain their character. Rather than smoothing away their differences, Altuzarra used the contrast to make the outfit feel chosen by an individual, with a taste for several kinds of glamour at once.
That argument survived changes of colour and scale. Look 12 paired a dark, ample jacket and pale yellow cuffs with another checked skirt. By look 24, brown leather, a white skirt and striped pink cuffs produced a sharper separation between the layers; a striped basket bag carried the colour down the body. The repeated silhouette offered a useful lesson in balance. Volume did not depend on baring the upper body or tightly defining the waist. A substantial jacket could hold its own against a skirt with considerable sweep.
Elsewhere, the relationship became leaner. Look 10 set a dark jacket, conspicuous white cuffs and brown trousers along a narrow vertical line. The following white dress, gathered beneath a broad black belt, opened out again. Seen together, these outfits suggested a wardrobe with room to change register, rather than a single silhouette promoted as the season's answer. The dark, low shoes visible beneath both also kept the emphasis on the clothes' proportions instead of extending them through a high heel.
Look 36 made the case for accumulation. Animal pattern, oversized white cuffs, a studded belt, a sheer embellished skirt and a small floral bag occupied the same outfit. There was plenty to look at, but the longer, narrower shape gave the competing details somewhere to go. The result was most interesting at the meeting points: where a cuff exaggerated a sleeve, or a heavy-looking belt interrupted a delicate layer. These were styling decisions that changed the apparent temperament of familiar pieces.
The final numbered look brought brown leather back over a long, pale floral dress, with striped cuffs and loose straps adding further interruptions. It returned the collection to its strongest proposition: outerwear could protect an outfit without suppressing its romantic character. The floral dress remained visible and expressive, even under the jacket's heavier presence.
Altuzarra's achievement was to make these combinations feel open to adjustment. The collection's interest lay in how garments negotiated space around one another, and how small alterations could redirect an entire look. Its vision of freedom was specific enough to read in the clothes, while leaving the wearer something to decide.
