The 2017 hotel interiors at Portals Nous, Mallorca, approached the island setting through light, craft and tactile surfaces. Designed by Marcel Wanders for the original Iberostar Grand Hotel Portals Nous, the project is listed in the studio’s portfolio as The Donna Portals. Its white architectural forms and reflective finishes established a continuous background for floral motifs, sculptural objects and rooms with individual themes.
The design sought a close relationship between interior and exterior. Transparent surfaces, pale colours and open arrangements helped carry views through the building, while changes in pattern and texture gave each area its own character. The original materials describe craft as central to the interpretation of the Mallorcan setting, with detail concentrated in furniture, ironwork, lighting and the treatment of walls.
A floral thread through the public rooms
The lobby introduced a bouquet motif that reappeared across different objects and surfaces. In the photographed arrival space, a predominantly white composition is interrupted by stronger colours and an intricately patterned floor. The ornament stays close to the furniture and the visitor’s route, allowing the larger room to remain light and open.

The bar carries the project’s patterned surfaces into a more intimate setting. Grand Portals Nous, an iconic interior by Marcel Wanders, operated by GRUPO IBEROSTAR, 2017. Images courtesy of Marcel Wanders.
At the bar, a curved counter becomes the principal organising element. Seating follows its edge, while the patterned floor continues beneath separate groups of furniture. Pale upholstery and darker details create a more intimate atmosphere than the lobby without abandoning its material language. The transition is made through proportion and lighting as much as through changes in decoration.

The restaurant develops the project’s openness through vaulted forms and plaster arches. These give the room a sequence of recognisable bays while allowing views to pass between them. The original design account identifies this relationship as a way to make divisions feel light. In the photograph, the tables sit within a clear architectural rhythm, with daylight keeping the white surfaces legible.
Different identities within the accommodation
The 2017 opening materials described 66 rooms, including penthouse accommodation and themed suites. Those suites allowed the studio to introduce more specific settings within the broader design. The Heritage Suite, for example, combined art and antique references. Its photographed furnishings and wall pieces produce a collected atmosphere, with the bed and seating arranged as parts of the same room.

The Games Suite approached identity through activity. The original release listed games and play equipment as part of the accommodation concept; the supplied photograph shows table football integrated into the interior. The object changes the way the room might be occupied and gives the suite a clear point of distinction beyond a variation in colour or upholstery.

In the lighter penthouse setting, yellow accents connect the pale interior with the studio’s interpretation of Mediterranean sunlight. The original design also linked bedrooms and bathrooms through open arrangements and a vanity element. Across the accommodation, the underlying palette provided continuity while furniture, artwork and particular activities supplied the differences between rooms.

Pattern from the spa to the pool
The spa presents a more enclosed and atmospheric composition. A white tree-like sculpture stands against darker blue surfaces, with a detailed floor beneath it. The original release identifies Bisazza flooring within the spa scheme. Here, a familiar motif from the wider project takes on a different character because its colour, surrounding light and material context have changed.

Outside, the pool continues the relationship between pale surfaces and concentrated pattern. The blue-and-white feature becomes a focal point against the water and the surrounding loungers. Together with the planted areas described in the original design, it extends the interior’s approach into the hotel’s coastal setting.
