Summer Palace at Jing An Shangri-La by André Fu Studio: Chinese Dining Reinterpreted for Jing An Shangri-La
Chinese landscape painting and peacock motifs inform a sequence of contemporary dining rooms in Shanghai.
A restaurant composed as a journey
At Summer Palace in Jing An Shangri-La Shanghai, AFSO’s 2013 design translates Chinese landscape painting and peacock motifs into a contemporary restaurant interior. The 1,500-square-metre project unfolds through a sequence of dining chambers with distinct architectural details.

From the Pantry to the Lantern Chamber
Bronze screens with abstract feather patterns define the Pantry Chamber, where a nine-metre open kitchen adds a theatrical focus. In the Lantern Chamber, more than 80 silk lanterns and deep orange lacquer introduce a different atmosphere, alongside a glazed kitchen for claypot cooking.

Detail, texture and intimate settings
The Imperial Chamber brings curved screens and bespoke pendants with olive-green and burnt-orange tassels. Across the venue, the studio created more than 350 custom furnishings and feature lights, combining plush fabrics, bronze and lacquer to connect the different rooms.
