Diane von Furstenberg Spring/Summer 2014 “Oasis”: Color, Freedom and the New York Runway
Updated: 6 days ago

Presented at New York Fashion Week in September 2013, Diane von Furstenberg’s Spring/Summer 2014 collection, Oasis, offered an exuberant answer to the exhaustion of a crowded fashion calendar. Colourful dresses, graphic prints and easy glamour suggested escape without abandoning the designer’s belief in confidence and expressive everyday dressing.
An Oasis of Colour and Print
The collection moved between a sun-drenched travel imagination and the direct appeal of New York fashion. Bold animal imagery and painterly landscapes appeared alongside graphic black-and-white patterns, while dresses in vivid red and blue brought a clear sense of optimism. A wardrobe of printed maxi dresses, relaxed separates and sharply composed evening pieces revealed a designer unwilling to treat fun as the opposite of serious fashion.
The Runway and Its Personalities
Von Furstenberg placed recognizable faces in a collection that celebrated movement and attitude. Models including Joan Smalls, Karlie Kloss and Naomi Campbell helped define the show’s upbeat mood. Naomi Campbell’s appearance near the close in a black-and-gold dress remains one of its most remembered moments. The designer’s own joyful finale reinforced the sense that Oasis was about emotional ease rather than costume-like travel fantasy.

Why the Collection Remains Relevant
The historical importance of this show is not limited to its casting or the period’s love of vivid prints. It captures a moment when Diane von Furstenberg understood fashion as a means of personal renewal: clothes that invite movement, pleasure and independence. The collection’s distinctive use of ready-to-wear ease made it a valuable record of New York style at the beginning of the 2010s.
