Phan Dang Hoang SS27: Ornament Beyond the Lapel
A pale sequinned panel falls from one hip almost to the ankle in the opening photograph of Phan Dang Hoang’s Spring/Summer 2027 gallery. It belongs to a strapless upper garment covered in yellow, pink, lilac and silver-toned motifs. The fabric gathers across the hips before one long section drops away, leaving a dark, uninterrupted lower silhouette behind it.

The asymmetry gives the reflective surface somewhere to move. Most of the colour is concentrated above the thighs, but the hanging panel extends it down one side. Black open-toe shoes and a black head covering repeat the dark base, while small bright earrings connect the face to the decorated garment. No account of the look needs to assign a historical or cultural origin to those shapes without further evidence.

Camera Nazionale della Moda Italiana identifies the gallery as Phan Dang Hoang womenswear SS27 and lists the Milan show on September 24, 2026. Three selected photographs offer different answers to the same visible question: where should ornament sit in relation to a clear garment outline?

In one outfit, a white double-breasted jacket establishes broad shoulders, a curved front and two pale buttons at a low fastening point. A purple flower-shaped embellishment spreads across one lapel. The jacket’s relatively plain surface makes that single motif conspicuous, but the outfit does not stop there: below the hem, layers of black floral lace alternate with sheer pale sections in an uneven, descending skirt.

The distinction between jacket and skirt is emphatic. Above, the contours are controlled and the decoration localized; below, repeated edges and changes in transparency break up the outline. Dark boots continue the black of the lace without introducing another colour. The combination allows tailoring and ornament to remain separate yet equally visible.

An orange patterned jacket takes a third route. Its fitted waist and extended shoulders create a pronounced shape, while small dark motifs cover the surface. A white shirt collar and cuffs appear beyond the jacket, and loose grey-green trousers soften the lower half. Held at the waist is a pale, fan-shaped accessory densely decorated with reflective and bead-like elements, ending in a tassel.

Here ornament is both worn and carried. The jacket has its own continuous pattern, but the handheld piece creates a brighter, more concentrated focal point. Across the selection, decorative weight moves from a draped panel to a lapel, a layered skirt and an accessory. The interest is not simply in abundance, but in how each placement changes the silhouette around it.
