Park Hyatt New York: Yabu Pushelberg’s Residential Approach to the Urban Hotel
Park Hyatt New York occupies a setting strongly associated with the city’s skyline, yet Yabu Pushelberg’s interior project begins with a more intimate reference: the New York residence. The studio dates its work to 2014 and identifies interiors and custom product design as its responsibilities. Christian de Portzamparc designed the building.
That division between architectural scale and interior scale is fundamental to the project. A tower is encountered from the city; a hotel is experienced through arrival, sitting, bathing and sleeping. The original design sought to make those smaller encounters feel personal within a substantial urban development. [1] [2]

The residential brief
Hyatt’s opening release describes the influence of Upper East Side homes and an approach based on art and custom furnishings. Public and private areas were conceived with that residential sensibility in mind. The emphasis was on spaces that guests could occupy comfortably rather than on a continuous series of grand gestures.
The residential character emerges through the relationship between objects, circulation and places to pause. Furnishings help establish the identity of individual rooms, while shared spaces invite activities familiar from a home: sitting with company, looking at art or spending time apart from the movement around them. Those smaller settings moderate the scale of the hotel. [2]

Custom furniture and everyday rituals
Yabu Pushelberg’s custom furnishings remain prominent in the hotel’s room descriptions. Stone bathroom surfaces, substantial windows and separate living areas in selected suites extend the residential vocabulary. The original 2014 scheme established this approach, which continues to frame how the property presents its accommodation.
At the scale of a hotel room, repeated routines bring the design into focus. Furniture relates to the window, the bed and the route through the space. Separate areas for living and sleeping can give a temporary stay a more settled rhythm. Those everyday relationships carry the residential brief into the private rooms. [3] [4]

A setting for art and gathering
The property’s public interiors have continued to develop around art and gathering. Hyatt’s event-space documentation describes meeting areas with a residential character and a later configuration of BEVY with wood panelling and a light artwork by Random International. Art becomes part of a social setting, encountered while sitting, meeting or moving through the room.
A subsequent chapter arrived in 2024 with Tatar Art Projects’ art programme for the Manhattan Suite. The consultancy names Yabu Pushelberg and Sawyer & Co. in its designer credits. This later work extends the hotel’s association with collected art while belonging to a different commission from the original opening interiors. [5] [6]

Domestic scale within a metropolitan setting
On West 57th Street, opposite Carnegie Hall, the hotel places the atmosphere of a furnished city home within a major urban building. The opening project also involved The Parker Company in procurement, coordinating the practical delivery of an interior whose identity depended on art and custom pieces.
The change of scale is central to Park Hyatt New York. The tower belongs to the skyline, while the interiors are encountered through a chair, a table, a window or a place to gather. The residential approach brings those individual moments into focus, giving the substantial building a more personal rhythm of occupation.
