Rick Owens Spring/Summer 2014: The Step Teams Who Rewrote the Paris Runway
Rick Owens transformed his Spring/Summer 2014 presentation in Paris in September 2013 by replacing the conventional line-up of runway models with step dancers from American teams. The result became a landmark not only for its performance energy but for the way it challenged assumptions about who may occupy a major fashion stage.

The Collection
The clothes were designed to accommodate and amplify rhythmic physical movement. Owens maintained the structural vocabulary associated with his work while introducing garments that could respond to the stamping, clapping and highly controlled choreography of stepping. Rather than treating performance as an addition to the collection, the presentation allowed the physical demands of the dancers to influence how each silhouette was understood.

The Runway and Its Setting
Teams including Washington Divas, Soul Steppers, the Momentums and the Zetas participated, with choreography overseen by Lauretta Malloy Noble and LeeAnet Noble. Their coordinated movement drew on a performance tradition associated with African American collegiate culture. The audience encountered a collective action in place of the standard individualized runway procession.

Historical Importance
The show endures as a major reference for fashion casting and representation. Its artistic strength came from taking a performance practice seriously, giving dancers authority and visibility within a luxury-fashion environment. It also revealed how a runway format could be altered without losing the relationship between clothing and the body.
