Louis Vuitton Autumn/Winter 2012: Marc Jacobs Brings a Steam Train to Paris
For Louis Vuitton Autumn/Winter 2012, Marc Jacobs built his runway around one of the label’s founding ideas: travel. Instead of simply referencing old luggage or railway posters, the show introduced an actual vintage-style steam train into the Cour Carrée in Paris, turning the reveal of the collection into the arrival of a spectacular travelling party.

The Collection
The clothes drew on the romance of historic rail journeys, layering skirts, dresses and outerwear over narrower trousers with decorative embellishment and strong accessories. Large hats and oversized bags gave the collection a sense of travel-era glamour, while more modern combinations prevented the clothes from becoming straightforward period costume.

The Runway and Its Setting
The train pulled into the venue and models stepped down one at a time, accompanied by porters who carried their substantial bags. The arrival was effectively the first look of the collection: a complete world created before the audience could inspect any individual piece. Jacobs used engineering, timing and choreography to turn a fashion show into a compressed narrative of departure and arrival.

Historical Importance
This collection remains a defining example of the modern luxury runway as theatre. It is important not merely for the size of its set but for the unusually direct connection between the presentation and the heritage of a company originally founded around travel goods.
