John Legend

John Legend, born John Roger Stephens on December 28, 1978, in Springfield, Ohio, grew up with church music and developed his skills in piano, singing and songwriting from an early age. After college, he collaborated as a musician and backing vocalist with other artists before launching his own career.

Get Lifted and recognition

Associated with the early years of GOOD Music around Kanye West, Legend released Get Lifted in 2004. Ordinary People revealed a blend of classic soul, R&B and piano. More albums followed, and All of Me became one of his best-known ballads worldwide.

EGOT and advocacy

Legend is one of the small number of artists to have won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony. Television and production have also become part of his career. He has also been active on issues including education, criminal justice and poverty.
