The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the world’s largest arts festival, held every August in the historic city of Edinburgh. Founded in 1947, the Fringe began when independent theater groups performed alongside the official Edinburgh International Festival. Over time, it evolved into an internationally celebrated cultural phenomenon where anyone with a story, performance, or artistic vision can participate. Today, thousands of shows take place across hundreds of venues, ranging from grand theaters and concert halls to underground clubs, churches, cafés, and temporary performance spaces.
