HEMU Spring/Summer 2027: The Silk Road Opens Shanghai Fashion Week
Shanghai designer label HEMU opened Shanghai Fashion Week Spring/Summer 2027 on October 8, 2026, with a collection titled Silk Road. Presented by the waterside Xintiandi venue, the runway drew on the cultural history of Dunhuang and the Hexi Corridor, placing traditional Chinese techniques in dialogue with contemporary dress.

The Collection
The collection incorporated references to yunjin and Song brocades, kesi silk tapestry, embroidery and other forms of regional textile craft. Rather than treat this heritage as a decorative archive, HEMU explored how historic surface designs, construction methods and techniques could enter a modern design language. This dialogue between research and new dressmaking was the central proposition of the show.

Runway and Presentation
The opening was accompanied by traditional live music, according to reporting published by the Shanghai municipal government. The combination of runway presentation and cultural performance established a distinctive tone for a fashion week increasingly focused on local independent designers with international ambitions.

Why It Matters
HEMU’s Silk Road presentation showed why the global fashion-week calendar is broader than the traditional four capitals. The collection built its story from Chinese material culture and local textile knowledge, giving craft its own authority rather than simply following a familiar European seasonal theme. Its position at the opening of Shanghai Fashion Week was an editorial statement about the importance of that design language.
