Guo Pei: The Art of Chinese Couture and Extraordinary Craftsmanship

Guo Pei creates garments at the meeting point of textile art, historical memory and grand imagination. The couturier's embroidered dresses can resemble pieces of architecture or ceremonial objects; their decorative power conceals years of technical research and the collaboration of specialist craftspeople.

Rose Studio and an enduring vision
Raised in Beijing, Guo Pei entered the clothing industry before establishing Rose Studio in 1997. The atelier provided a place to develop extraordinary workmanship, especially elaborate hand embroidery, and to explore a design language rooted in Chinese craft traditions while embracing a global history of fashion.
A cultural dialogue expressed through dress
Her practice draws from imperial iconography, architectural forms, myths and the symbolic languages of different cultures. Rather than treating historical dress as something fixed, she reimagines its visual possibilities through contemporary materials, structure and couture construction.

A defining moment on the world stage
International audiences became widely familiar with Guo Pei when Rihanna wore an enormous yellow embroidered cape and gown to the 2015 Met Gala. Yet the work was part of an established artistic practice that had already developed over many years; its visibility brought wider attention to the artisans of her Beijing atelier.

Museums and haute couture
Guo Pei's work has been exhibited at institutions across several continents, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Asian Civilisations Museum and the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Invitations to present on the Paris haute couture calendar further established her place in the conversation about fashion as cultural production.

Gilternity: An Everlasting Radiance
The Spring/Summer 2026 Gilternity collection offers a recent view of Guo Pei's approach. Rich surfaces, elaborate silhouettes and striking color reinforce the close relationship between handcraft and spectacle. The following selected looks are from the house's official collection archive, rather than generic fashion photographs.

A legacy of craftsmanship
Guo Pei's work preserves and transforms techniques that require sustained training. Its lasting importance is not simply in the unforgettable scale of individual garments, but in how craft knowledge can remain intellectually and artistically relevant in contemporary couture.
