Comme des Garçons Spring/Summer 2027: Rei Kawakubo’s Dialogue Between Royal and Real Life
Rei Kawakubo brought an unsettled kind of ceremony to Comme des Garçons Spring/Summer 2027, shown in Paris on 3 October 2026. Sarah Mower’s Vogue report records a brief statement connecting royal life with everyday life. The photographs make that tension tangible through swollen silhouettes, pale crowns and surfaces that repeatedly open to reveal another colour beneath.
A crown above an unstable silhouette
The opening look establishes a surprisingly strict arrangement. A narrow waist separates a rounded blue upper body from an enormous spherical skirt. A jagged opening runs around the skirt, revealing gathered red fabric inside. Its points interrupt the apparent smoothness of the outer shell, so the eye keeps moving between the garment’s perimeter and its interior. The white crown sits far above it, making the model appear to carry two competing structures.
The next variations refuse to settle into a single type of dress. Some blue forms fold across the torso like overlapping panels; others widen into paired lobes at the hips. In the eighth photograph, a saturated blue outfit concentrates its largest volumes at the sleeves and thighs. The dark gaps between those shapes matter as much as their size: they allow a standing figure to remain visible within a silhouette that seems to keep expanding.
Pattern becomes construction
A checked surface makes the ninth look read differently. The small repeated squares emphasise changes in direction across the bulbous skirt, while its pale headpiece repeats the ceremonial outline seen earlier. Pattern measures the distortion. The same principle returns with stripes and small dots, whose regularity draws attention to the irregular forms supporting them.
The seventeenth look is especially direct. Red fabric covered in small white dots forms rounded loops around a pale central body. The loops project at the shoulders, sides and hips, leaving narrow interruptions through which the underlying structure can be seen. The pattern is familiar and playful; the scale makes it difficult to treat as a decorative trim. It determines the outfit’s whole relation to the surrounding space.
The return of blue
The closing blue looks change the distribution of volume. Rounded sections accumulate across the upper body, while skirts project sideways, gather into a broad dome or stretch into a longer outline. Without the tall white crowns, the proportions move closer to the head and shoulders. That shift gives the final group its own rhythm, even as it retains the earlier emphasis on seams and inflated shapes.
The collection’s force lies in the way each outfit makes its construction impossible to ignore. Waist, shoulder and hem are still useful reference points, but they no longer guarantee familiar proportions. Kawakubo turns those points into questions about how much space a dressed body can occupy—and what kind of authority such an image might project.
