Blue Bottle Pudong T2 by Neri&Hu: A Quiet Anchor for Travellers
In the movement of Shanghai Pudong International Airport, Neri&Hu conceived a Blue Bottle Coffee location as a deliberately stable point. The café occupies just sixty square metres in Terminal 2, yet its sculptural enclosure is designed to be recognisable from different directions. The concept uses the anchor as a metaphor for a place to pause amid departures, arrivals and constant movement.
A quiet landmark in a busy concourse
Airports are built around rapid orientation. Shops must be legible to passengers approaching from unfamiliar directions, sometimes with very little time to make a decision. Neri&Hu responds with a compact, sharply outlined form that is visible from nearby escalators and circulation routes. The design establishes a sense of permanence without relying on large-scale graphic displays.

The working coffee counter remains an obvious destination. Guests can see where drinks are ordered and prepared, allowing the architecture to support an efficient service experience. This practical clarity is as important to the café's character as its unusual exterior silhouette.
The contrast between two material volumes
At the base, handmade curved bricks give the counter a textured and grounded presence. Their irregularity lends a craft quality to the point where travellers interact with the store. Above, a lighter white volume appears to hover, its textured finish creating a different visual register from the lower brickwork.

The upper and lower parts are clearly different, yet they belong to one composition. The brick makes the café approachable at human height; the pale upper form gives it an identity across the larger terminal. The restrained palette helps the store resist visual competition with surrounding signage, retail displays and passenger movement.
A small project with a clear purpose
Openings within the volume connect coffee preparation with the wider airport environment. The café can be recognised from several approaches without losing its compact geometry. It offers a useful example of a retail design that is simultaneously a working service point and a small architectural object.

Its character comes from the alignment of concept and function. The idea of an anchor is not simply a name applied to the design: the stable form, tactile materials and visible coffee counter each contribute to a temporary pause within a space otherwise organised around departure. Neri&Hu demonstrates that a modest floor area can support a strong architectural identity.
