Christian Dior Fall 2007 Couture: Galliano Celebrates 60 Years at Versailles
In July 2007, Christian Dior commemorated its sixtieth anniversary with a haute couture collection presented at the Orangerie at Versailles. Under John Galliano, the house assembled an exceptional cast and a setting associated with the history of French courtly display, but the mood also carried a quieter, commemorative character.

The Collection
The designer drew on painting, fashion illustration and photography to create a sequence of individually composed couture silhouettes. The garments were defined by bold colour, strong volumes and detailed work, but they also formed a tribute to the enduring visual language of Christian Dior. The anniversary was an opportunity to examine how the house’s historic identity could be interpreted through a contemporary creative voice.

The Runway and Its Setting
Models including Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Amber Valletta, Shalom Harlow and Gisele Bündchen joined the presentation. The nighttime Versailles setting provided a sense of grandeur that was justified by the occasion, yet the show also honoured the memory of Christian Dior and Steven Robinson, Galliano’s chief designer, who died during the collection’s development.

Historical Importance
The event is a landmark of luxury fashion’s institutional memory: a historic house used a major anniversary to celebrate creative craft and the people who shaped it. It demonstrates how haute couture can operate simultaneously as a runway, a public ceremony and a form of remembrance.
