Ruth Handler: The Entrepreneur Behind Barbie

Ruth Handler was born in 1916 in Denver, Colorado, and became one of the most influential entrepreneurs in the toy industry. With her husband Elliot Handler and Harold Matson, she helped create Mattel.

The idea behind Barbie

Watching her daughter Barbara play with paper dolls representing adults, Handler realized that girls also wanted to imagine their futures. Barbie launched in 1959 and was named after Barbara. She became one of the most famous toys in history.

Business, criticism and reinvention

Barbie inspired both fascination and criticism around beauty standards, gender roles and consumerism. After breast cancer and a mastectomy, Handler also developed Nearly Me, a breast prosthesis born from her own experience.

Ruth Handler died in 2002, leaving a legacy built on commercial vision, product design and a remarkable ability to transform a family observation into a global cultural phenomenon.
