Updated: Jul 25, 2024

Weddings of Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor, one of Hollywood's most iconic figures, lived a life filled with extraordinary glamour, romance, and drama. Her eight marriages to seven different men are a testament to her passionate approach to life and love. Each wedding was a grand event, reflecting her status as a Hollywood legend and her unique personality. Let's take a journey through the spectacular weddings of Elizabeth Taylor, each a dazzling chapter in her storied life.

1. Conrad "Nicky" Hilton (1950-1951)

Elizabeth Taylor's first wedding was a fairy tale affair. At the age of 18, she married hotel heir Conrad "Nicky" Hilton on May 6, 1950. The ceremony was held at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Beverly Hills, and the reception took place at the Beverly Hills Hotel. Elizabeth wore a stunning satin gown designed by Helen Rose, featuring a 15-yard satin train and seed pearl embroidery. Despite the glamorous start, the marriage lasted only eight months, ending in divorce.

2. Michael Wilding (1952-1957)

Elizabeth's second marriage was to British actor Michael Wilding, 20 years her senior. They married on February 21, 1952, in a low-key ceremony at Caxton Hall in London. This marriage, marked by a quieter, more intimate ceremony, reflected a different side of Elizabeth's personality. They had two sons together, Michael and Christopher, but eventually divorced in 1957.

3. Mike Todd (1957-1958)

On February 2, 1957, Elizabeth married film producer Mike Todd in Acapulco, Mexico. This wedding was a lavish affair, showcasing the couple's larger-than-life personalities. Elizabeth wore a hooded silk chiffon gown, and the ceremony was attended by Hollywood's elite. Tragically, Mike Todd died in a plane crash just over a year later, leaving Elizabeth devastated.

4. Eddie Fisher (1959-1964)

Elizabeth's fourth marriage was shrouded in scandal, as she wed singer Eddie Fisher on May 12, 1959, shortly after his divorce from Debbie Reynolds. The wedding took place in Las Vegas, and Elizabeth wore a green chiffon dress. Their marriage was highly publicized and controversial, ultimately ending in divorce in 1964.

5. Richard Burton (1964-1974)

Elizabeth Taylor's fifth and most famous marriage was to actor Richard Burton. They first married on March 15, 1964, in a private ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton in Montreal. Their passionate and tumultuous relationship was the stuff of Hollywood legend, with the couple marrying and divorcing twice. Elizabeth and Richard's second wedding took place on October 10, 1975, in Botswana. Despite their intense love, their relationship couldn't withstand the pressures of their fame, leading to a second divorce in 1976.

6. John Warner (1976-1982)

On December 4, 1976, Elizabeth married politician John Warner in a ceremony held at his farm in Virginia. This marriage marked Elizabeth's transition into the political sphere as she supported Warner's successful Senate campaign. Despite their efforts, they grew apart, leading to a divorce in 1982.

7. Larry Fortensky (1991-1996)

Elizabeth's final marriage was to construction worker Larry Fortensky. They married on October 6, 1991, at Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch. The wedding was a star-studded event, with Elizabeth wearing a pale yellow Valentino gown. Despite their differing backgrounds, they shared a deep bond, but eventually divorced in 1996.

A Legacy of Love and Glamour

Elizabeth Taylor's weddings were as legendary as her acting career, each one reflecting a different chapter in her life and her ever-evolving personality. From opulent Hollywood ceremonies to intimate political unions, her marriages showcased her indomitable spirit and her belief in love.
