Despite years of online rumors and fan-made trailers, there was no officially announced new Harry Potter movie released in 2025. The confirmed return to Hogwarts is an HBO Original television series: a new adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books rather than a continuation of the original film cast’s story.
What is officially confirmed?
HBO has announced an eight-episode first season titled Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The series is scheduled to debut on December 25, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max where available.
The production is designed as a faithful, multi-season adaptation of the seven novels. The original eight films remain separate and continue to be available worldwide.
The new Harry, Hermione and Ron
Dominic McLaughlin plays Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton plays Hermione Granger and Alastair Stout plays Ron Weasley. The adult cast includes John Lithgow as Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as Minerva McGonagall, Paapa Essiedu as Severus Snape and Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid.

Is a Cursed Child movie confirmed?
No official Harry Potter and the Cursed Child film has been announced. Videos presenting themselves as trailers for a 2025 movie were fan-made or concept trailers and should not be treated as official Warner Bros. material.
