CHANEL Autumn/Winter 2014: Karl Lagerfeld’s Grand Palais Supermarket — opening image matches cover, model head visible

On 4 March 2014, Karl Lagerfeld converted Paris’s Grand Palais into a spectacular Chanel-branded supermarket for the house’s Autumn/Winter 2014 ready-to-wear presentation. Instead of treating couture codes as remote objects of desire, the show set them among the imagery and routines of daily consumption.

The Collection

Tweed jackets, coats, sporty layers, graphic accessories and trainers worked in an unexpectedly everyday register. The models’ movement through aisles of elaborately branded groceries brought luxury into direct contact with mass-market visual culture. The collection was witty but carefully controlled: the ordinary shopping trip became a framework for experimenting with the house’s familiar vocabulary.

Runway and Presentation

The set was a complete fictional shopping environment with shelves, product labels and staged abundance, all filtered through Chanel’s branding. Models walked with baskets as though browsing, blurring the boundaries between runway, performance and temporary architecture. The supermarket was not merely scenery; it supplied the conceptual logic for the entire presentation.

Why It Matters

The show remains a defining example of Lagerfeld’s ability to create a coherent fashion universe around a provocative idea. Its impact extends beyond runway theatrics to the relationship between luxury imagery, everyday life, merchandising and the future of immersive brand experiences.
