Frühe Jahre in Virginia

George Washington wurde 1732 in Virginia geboren und sammelte als Vermesser, Landbesitzer und Offizier frühe Erfahrungen in der kolonialen Gesellschaft.

Amerikanische Revolution

1775 wurde er zum Oberbefehlshaber der Kontinentalarmee ernannt. Seine Führung im Unabhängigkeitskrieg machte ihn zu einer zentralen Figur der Revolution.

Verfassung und erste Präsidentschaft

Washington leitete 1787 den Verfassungskonvent und wurde 1789 zum ersten Präsidenten der Vereinigten Staaten gewählt. Seine Amtsführung schuf zahlreiche Präzedenzfälle.

Machtbegrenzung und Amtsübergabe

Nach zwei Amtszeiten verzichtete er auf eine weitere Kandidatur. Der freiwillige Machtverzicht wurde zu einem wichtigen Symbol für den zivilen Übergang politischer Autorität.

Sklaverei und historische Widersprüche

Washington war zugleich Sklavenhalter. Versklavte Menschen arbeiteten auf Mount Vernon; dieser Teil seiner Biografie ist wesentlich für eine vollständige historische Bewertung.

Indigene Völker und Expansion

Seine militärische und politische Laufbahn war auch mit Konflikten, Landnahme und expansiver Politik gegenüber indigenen Nationen verbunden.
